When in Oz

Updated: Apr 10, 2022

Last week, I flew to Australia. If you’ve liked my Facebook page (www.facebook.com/KristanHigginsBooks), you’ve seen my touristy (and sometimes silly) pictures of my adventures thus far, but I thought it would be fun to tell you what’s different here in beautiful Oz.

Light switches are the opposite of ours; I keep turning things on instead of off.

Fire stairs don’t lead to other floors.

Money is prettier here.

The toilets have a half flush and full flush option. I find this fascinating and environmentally healthy.

American coffee is very hard to come by; the Aussies prefer to chew their coffee, and espresso is common. A “weak latte” is the closest I’ve come to “regular.”

Lunch hour, boot-camp style exercise classes are held in parks.

Downton Abbey, Season Three, hasn’t finished airing yet.

Weather aberrations are seen as a personal failing. “I’m sorry for this rain! You must come back when we can do better for you!” “It’s not usually so humid here. Sorry!”

Grilled tomatoes and baked beans are a breakfast staple.

The parks and botanical gardens are immaculately kept. No litter anywhere!

People seem to love Americans. : )
