This morning, I took the kids down the street to feed the neighbor’s horses. He has a lovely little farm, complete with a pond, fields, and a beautiful barn. Two cats kept us company as we fed the horses, and a mockingbird serenaded us from a pine tree, going through its complete repertoire from frog to blue jay. A flock of red-winged blackbirds clacked from the oak trees, and as the kids did their thing, I leaned against the fence and breathed in the smell of lilacs and horses, listened to the big animals munching, felt the cool promise of rain in the air.
To quote the great Thoreau: “Heaven is under our feet as well as over our heads.”
Happy Earth Day.
